Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries in Lawsuits
Brain injuries are typically categorized as either traumatic brain injuries (TBI) or acquired brain injuries (ABI). TBIs are caused by an external force that causes the brain to collide with the skull, while ABIs are typically due to inadequate oxygen in the brain as the result of disease, toxins or stroke.
A TBI may occur in a variety of circumstances, from household accidents to sports injuries. These severe brain injuries can also be the result of negligence, such as TBIs sustained in car accidents. Types of TBIs that are frequently the focus of personal injury lawsuits include:
- Concussion: A minor TBI often caused by a blow to the head or severe shaking; symptoms are usually temporary and include headache, dizziness, memory problems and disorientation
- Coup-countercoup: A type of TBI caused by an impactful force that results in the brain slamming against one side of the skull then bouncing back to the opposite side
- Diffuse axonal: This TBI is caused by the brain moving back and forth, severing nerve fibers and blood vessels, and leading to bleeding on the brain or a hemorrhage
- Intracranial hematoma: This occurs when a blood vessel ruptures within the brain, causing an accumulation of blood and putting pressure on your brain tissue; intracranial hematomas are often the result of another TBI
